Cosmetic Formulating Blog Series | Formulating Basics

Have you been making your own skin and/or hair care products? Or do you aspire to make your own? Developing a good, basic formula is a must. Cosmetic Formulating can be very confusing and overwhelming. At Joan Morais Naturals we have two in-depth courses on developing your own professional natural skin or hair care products. In these courses you will learn all about cosmetic formulating. In this blog series we will be exploring some of the basics about cosmetic formulating- what is it, how to build a formula, and testing your formulations.

Formulating Basics

The formula is basically your “blueprint” on how to make your product. It will include the percentages of the ingredients and specific instructions, the procedure on how to manufacture the formulation. Prior to building your formula, you should do research on the ingredients your using, their effect on the skin and hair and how they interact with other ingredients in the formula.

You will also need to decide your vision for your products. Do you want it to be organic, natural, and/or cruelty-free? While there is no specific definition for what is “natural” according to the cosmetic industry, there is a lot of information available on what can be considered “natural” etc. Do your research and develop your definition of natural to better clarify the ingredients you won’t allow in the formulation and the ones you will allow. There are standards for organic cosmetics that must be followed.

Understanding Measurements

There are two different ways to measure ingredients- by volume or weight. Volume is using a liquid measuring cup and adding the ingredient to the cup. Weight is weighing the ingredient on the scale. You will also need to decide to measure in grams or ounces. Having accurate measurements is very important in order for you to replicate and have a consistent product. It is also important that you have reliable and accurate tools for measuring that will be consistent in your measurements. You also must pay attention to detail and make sure to write everything down in your lab notebook! Often you think you will remember, but you can easily forget!

Know Your Ingredients

As mentioned previously, it is very important to know your ingredients. You should know the purpose of each ingredient and how it looks, feels and smells. Also, how do your ingredients blend together? Do they have synergy? Synergy is when the whole is greater than the individual parts. When your ingredients are combined together, they should create a superior product.

Making Professional Natural Skin and Hair Care Products

As you can see, a lot goes into building a formula and all of this is before you even start putting your ingredients together. Some people just like to jump right in by experimenting with different combination of ingredients. There is nothing wrong with this method, however it is important for you to obtain the knowledge you need to produce a professionally-grade natural skin or hair care product. At Joan Morais Naturals, we offer two courses on making your own professional natural products. We have our Professional Natural Skin Care Product Making Course and our Professional Natural Hair Care Product Making Course.  In these courses you will learn all about formulating, including more in-depth information on natural, organic, and cruelty-free cosmetics, how to measure with accuracy and consistency, and in-depth information on natural and organic ingredients and developing a synergy in your products.

Rosewater has been used since ancient times to create smooth and beautiful skin and hair. It is a well known beauty secret. Rosewater is astringent. Additional ingredients can be added to rosewater to moisturize and soften the skin and hair. It is very easy to make your own rosewater. Rosewater can also be used in facial toner recipes. Read on to find out how.

Eco-Friendly Packaging

Eco-Friendly Packaging For Skin & Hair Care Products

Eco-Friendly Packaging

Eco-Friendly Packaging for Skin & Hair Care Products

Think about your most recent skin, body or hair care product you purchased. What made you buy THAT product? Have you purchased it before? Did you plan to buy it? What did you like about the packaging? What didn’t you like about the packaging? Once you took it home, was there anything else you noticed about the packaging that you may or may not have liked? What about Eco-Friendly packaging? Did that happen to cross your mind?

Eco-Friendly products and packaging are an important area that consumers are taking notice. Organic and/or natural skin, body and hair care product use has been on the rise for some time, but lately the packaging and containers the products are in are becoming important as well. Consumers are looking for more eco-friendly, recycled, and/or glass containers and less plastic.

What makes a package Eco-Friendly?

How do we know if the products we purchase are in eco-friendly packaging? Well, there is no actual strict definition or criteria on what makes something eco-friendly. There is a lot that goes into it that needs to be thought out.  The EPA identifies several important factors to what makes a product “more green” including toxic exposures, water pollution, natural resources used (including water and materials), etc. A container/package might be considered Eco-Friendly if it is made from renewable, recycled or biodegradable materials. Other factors to think about include the shape and weight of the container as this affects the shipping/transportation of the product. Also, the energy it takes to actually make the container/package including if toxic materials are used and the impact the manufacturing process has on the environment.

However, using eco-friendly containers and packaging is not that simple. It is really important that you test out your product in the container.  Many recycled and biodegradable materials may not hold up depending on what raw materials are used in the product. Cost is another aspect to think about. Most eco-friendly packaging is going to cost more, so thinking how that will affect your pricing is important.

It is very important to explore how you package your professional natural skin, body or hair care product prior to putting your product out on the market. Often times we pick out a package due to aesthetics- what packaging we like the best. Aesthetics is obviously important, as it’s usually what initially attracts us to the product. However, aesthetics alone is not enough to go by. It is important to look at the “whole package” so to speak. Check out our previous blog post on containers for skin and hair care products and what you should consider prior to picking out your container. Make sure to also think about the environmental impact your packaging has as consumers are taking notice!

Easy DIY Skin Care Recipes

Know Your Skin- Part 3: Easy DIY Skin Care Recipes

Know Your Skin- Part 3: Easy DIY Skin Care Recipes

Now that we figured our your skin type and learned about some plant oils, essential oils and herbs that are best for your skin type, lets put it all together for some easy DIY skin care recipes.

Natural Cleansers

Cleansing is very important for vibrant skin. A facial cleanser should gently lift dirt and make-up and should never be harsh.

A very simple and pure way to cleanse your face is to use a plant oil as oils absorb dirt and make-up. Some great oils to use for your cleanser are olive oil, sesame oil, and castor oil. These oils are thick and take longer for the skin to absorb. Add in a few drops of lemon essential oil for a refreshing cleanser.

Facial Steam

Facial steams are a great way to open your pores while releasing toxins from your skin. When you add in herbs to your facial steam, the nourishing properties of the herbs will be absorbed by the skin. Facial steams are great for congested, oily and normal skin. Facial steams may aggravate the skin for those with acne or sensitive skin and should only be used with care. You can try reducing the temperature of the water and only steam for a few minutes.

For an herbal facial steam you simply combine hot water with dried or fresh herbs in a large heat-resistant bowl. Use a combination of herbs that are personalized towards your skin type. Allow the herbs to steep in the water for about 5 minutes and then hover your face over the bowl with a towel draped over your head. Make sure to take care not to be too close and burn your skin from the steam! If it gets too hot, simply lift up the towel to allow air in. Steam for 10 minutes.

Moisturizers

Moisturizers are important to nourish and protect the skin. Plant oil serums are some of the best products for your face and some even have a natural sun protection (such as sesame, jojoba, avocado, etc.). You only need a few drops for your face. Even those with oily skin can use plant oil serums, as the oil communicates to the skin to stop producing too much skin.

DIY Plant Oil Serum

Choose your plant oil and essential oil from the list here or from a more extensive list in How to Make Your Own Natural Facial Products eBook that is personalized to your skin type.

  • 1 ounce of plant oil
  • Add 1-3 drops of essential oils
  • gently roll or swish around the ingredients together to blend

Our eBook, How to Make Your Own Natural Facial Products has more in-depth information on plant oils, essential oils, and herbs for your skin as well as specific recipes for facial products. This eBook goes into more detail on natural ingredients for skin care, steps for radiant skin, and recipes for cleansers, exfoliants, toners, and moisturizers.
