How to Make Natural Bath Bombs | Cocoa Butter Bath Bomb Recipe

Bath BombsHow to Make Natural Bath Bombs

Bath bombs also called bath fizzy, bath fizzies and bath fizzers are an exceptional and fun product to add to the bath. Bath bombs are dropped into a tub of water and they fizz in the water releasing aroma, salts, oils and herbs into the bath tub. They are convenient to travel with to create a luxurious bath in a hotel and they make great gifts for bath lovers.

The two main ingredients that make bath bombs fizz are baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) and citric acid.  Bath bombs can also be made with sea salt, Epsom salt, plant oils, cornstarch, oat flour, butters, essential oils and powdered herbs.

There are so many different recipes.  One of my favorite recipes contains cocoa butter. I also like to add sea salt, herbs and soothing grains. I share my basic cocoa butter bath bomb recipe with you below.

Bath Bomb Ingredients

Baking Soda (sodium bicarbonate) is a natural mineral salt found throughout the world.  Baking soda softens the bath water. It soothes, deodorizes, and cleanses the skin. Baking soda also helps to relieve itching.

Citric Acid is from natural organic acids from the fermentation of fruit sugars from citrus fruits; lemons, limes and oranges.  Citric acid is also obtained from sugar, dextrose and molasses. It is used as a preservative in many drinks and foods.

Essential Oils come from plants, add scent and therapeutic properties.

Clays can be added to help draw impurities and they naturally color the bath bomb.

Cocoa Butter is an excellent moisturizer for the skin, creating soft and silky skin.

All About Hair: Hair Types and Scalp Conditions

Let’s talk about hair! Short, long, curly, straight, frizzy, dry, oily, natural, relaxed, and the list goes on. Everyone’s hair is unique to them. At Joan Morais Naturals we are all about celebrating YOUR hair and what you can do to nourish and care for your hair in the best way for YOU.

Most hair products you find at the store and even the hair salons are not going to be nourishing for your unique hair needs. Did you know that most shampoos are meant to dry out your hair so that you then need conditioner to add the moisture back in?! Our scalp is a part of our skin and has a natural balance of oils. Our scalp, however, can easily get off track due to a variety of reasons including our personal health, our hormones, and environmental exposure including weather, sun and hair color and products.

Our hair is actually dead, but we can still do things to take care of our hair and scalp to create vibrancy and health. Lets learn about different hair types and some ways we can best take care of our hair to bring out its natural beauty!

Hair Types

Normal: Hair is balanced- not too oily or too dry. The hair has shine and vibrancy and can use most natural hair care products.

Dry: Hair looks dull, brittle and frizzy. It is lacking moisture and may have split ends and scalp may have dry flakes. Shampoo dry hair less frequently and use natural hair care products with moisturizing agents and contain essential fatty acids.

Oily: Hair has excessive moisture. It lacks body and looks dull and weighed down. The imbalance may be from diet, hormones, medications, health issues and product use. Wash hair frequently with mild shampoo to reduce oil production.

Scalp Conditions

Stress: Stress can cause hair loss or hair to change color. Take a look at our past presidents at the beginning of the term to the end of their presidency to see a dramatic difference! In times of stress use essential oils and herbs on the scalp that promote relaxation and calmness.

Hair Loss: Hair loss is also called alopecia. Alopecia can be heredity or be from medications, hormonal changes, and chemical hair applications such as hair color, relaxation and perms. Prevention is the best way to counter hair loss. A daily scalp massage with jojoba oil prior to shampooing has been known to promote a healthy scalp.

Dandruff: Dandruff occurs when the scalp is out of balance. It can be oily or dry. Use essential oils and herbs that are anti-fungal and balancing.

Come back next week as we go over the best plant oils, essential oils and herbs for your hair type and scalp!

Fall Natural Hair Care Tips: Make Your Own Natural Hair Care Products

Fall Natural Hair Care Tips

Fall Natural Hair Care Tips

As we ease into Fall, the days get shorter, the air crisper, and we start to seek out more comfort whether it is from our Pumpkin Spice Lattes, a warm baked muffin, or a cozy sweater. While the summer days may be gone, their effects on our hair still remain- from the increased time outside exposing our strands to strong UV rays of the sun, swimming in chlorinated pools, those “sun-kissed” highlights you got, and more. Your hair could also use some comfort as you start to settle in before winter.

Here are some fall natural hair care tips to revive your tresses just in time for sweater-weather.

  1. Get your Hair Trimmed. Trimming off those split ends can do wonders for your hair. Not only do you feel fresher it can actually improve the health of your hair by getting rid of the breakage; your hair will be smoother and can even look thicker. You may also want to think about changing your hairstyle. The changing of seasons is a great time to try something different.
  2. Use Natural Ingredients. Many hair care products you get at the store and even those in the fancy hair salons have ingredients that can actually cause more damage to your hair. Many synthetic ingredients can irritate your scalp, dry out your hair, and more. Finding a good, true natural hair care product can be tough, which is why many people have started to make their own hair care products. At Joan Morais Naturals, all of our formulas are formulated using the Natural Product Association and Whole Foods Market as a guide. This means:
    • No Parabens
    • Sulfate-Free
    • No Dimethicone
    • No PEG’s
    • No Artificial Fragrance
  • No Animal Products
  1. Give your Hair a Good Moisturizing. Your dried-out hair strands could benefit from a hair mask. Hair masks add nourishment and deep conditioning to your hair. It helps repair damaged hair and can promote smooth and shiny hair. Fresh hair care masks can be made using fresh ingredients such as avocados, bananas, coconut milk, and coconut yogurt. In the Professional Natural Hair Care Product Making Course there are three hair mask formulas including the Coconut Milk & Banana Hair Mask, the Luminous Shine & Moisturizing Hair Mask, and the Papaya & Coconut Milk Hair Mask.
