Happy Spring! The arrival of spring brings us increasingly warmer and brighter days and a promise of summer. Spring is a perfect time to plant new seeds (both figuratively and literally), start new projects, and take action! Spring also brings with it a beautiful natural landscape of flowers. In this blog post we will be exploring flower essences- what are they, how to connect with and utilize the power of flowers in your body, hair, and skin care products, and additional resources for making and purchasing flower essences.

Flower Essences

“Food nourishes the body, but flowers heal the soul. ” -old proverb

Flower essences are made from a flowering plant that are used therapeutically to benefit mood and emotional wellbeing. Flower essences are very safe and can be used by children, elderly and animals. Every flower has a different healing property. Flower essences affect us in very subtle and gentle ways by working on an energetic and vibrational level. The energy of the healing property of the flower that is being used (for example- calmness) is amplified while opposing energy (worry or fear) is lessened. Sometimes flower essences work immediately and other times they may take days or weeks as they slowly work with your energy.

flower essences and gem essences

“Food nourishes the body, but flowers heal the soul.”
-old proverb

I have experimented with gem and flower essences for over 10 years. I use gem and flower essences in my cosmetic formulations.

Flower essences have been used for a long time in indigenous cultures. Dr. Bach (1886-1936) is the pioneer that brought the recognition of flower essences into modern times. He wrote a book Heal Thyself in 1931. He believed there are more gentle methods for healing. One of his patients, a child, was sick and traditional methods were not working for this child. Dr. Bach used flower essences on her and she became well. Dr. Bach created 38 flower essences that are still highly used today. The 38th flower essence is Rescue Remedy Flower, a synergy of flowers to use in stressful situations, emergencies and trauma.

Flower essences work on a vibrational level and address the psychological and emotional aspects of the body and mind. They help to balance the emotions. Flower essences are gentle and do not interfere with any medications or treatments since they work on a subtle energetic level matching the vibration of the well-being needed for the person to the vibration of the flower. Flower essences are safe for babies, children, elders and adults.

Gem essences use the energy of the mineral also called a precious stone, crystal or gem. Everything in the universe is energy and holds a unique form of energy.

Precious stones were used in most ancient cultures for healing purposes; Native American Indians, African Tribes, Aztecs, Australian Aborigines, The Celts, Egypt, The Mayans, The Romans, The Scots, Tibetan Buddhists and more. The bible refers to crystals several hundred times. Saint Hildegard of Bingen used precious stones to heal others. In the middle ages popes and kings used plants and stones to heal. Sometimes the stones would be placed in cooking soups for the person in need.

A familiar example of how a gem works is the stone quartz. Quartz generates a charge and is used in watches (Rolex), clocks and radios as a transmitter and receiver.

Since working with gem and flower essences in cosmetic formulations for a long time, I have found certain essences that have an affinity for the skin and hair and use them in all of my natural body, hair and skin care formulations. A few of my favorite gem essences are rose quartz, diamond, alexandrite and citrine. A few of my favorite flower essences are lotus, rose, gardenia, jasmine and dandelion.
