My 3 Favorite Fall Plant Oils - Joan Morais Naturals

Plant Oils

Plants store oils (triglycerides) as their energy source for seeds to germinate. Oils have been used since ancient times. Different cultures have used oils for skin care to promote vibrant healthy skin. Oils are emollients; they soften the skin and hair. Oils provide rich nourishment, regeneration and skin health. Oils add shine, conditioning and form a film on the skin for protection.

Plant Oils also called carrier oils and vegetable oils provide rich nourishment, protection and lubrication to skin. They help to keep skin soft and supple. The most nutritious oils are the least processed; organic, cold pressed and unrefined. These oils have a vibrant color, a stronger odor and many nutrients.

Some oils are not available in cold pressed or unrefined. The shelf life is shorter for unrefined oils. Some oils are deodorized as they have strong odors and ruin the formulation with the strong odor. There are more natural processes now to remove some of the scent and color. The shelf life listed below is for oils with the least processing. Oils that have gone through processing and refinement have a longer shelf life. Ask the supplier where the oil is from, the type of processing and the shelf life of the oil.

My Top 3 Favorite Fall Plant Oils

Avocado Oil Persea americana shelf life 1 year
Avocado oil comes from the fruit of the avocado tree. The lightly refined avocado oil is thick, dark green with a light herbal scent. The refined oil is pale yellow with no scent. This rich penetrating and emollient oil contains Vitamins A, B1, B2, C, D, and E, lecithin and essential fatty acids. It is nourishing, hydrating, soothing, moisturizing, softening and restorative. Emollient
Tips: The lightly refined oil will color your lotion or cream a pale green with a mild green scent. The highly refined oil is pale yellow with no scent.
Usage: Use for most skin types especially sensitive, dry, dehydrated, mature, psoriasis and eczema. Age-defying

Sunflower Oil Helianthus annus shelf life 2-3 years
Sunflower oil is pressed from the seeds of the plant. This oil is wealthy in essential fatty acids, vitamins A, D, and E and is deeply nourishing and conditioning.
Tips: Sunflower oil is another of my favorites since it is readily available in organic, not overly expensive and the properties are similar to olive oil but it is not as heavy and easily absorbed by the skin.
Usage: Use for most skin types, especially dry, mature and damaged.

Sesame Oil Sesamum indicum shelf life 2 years
Sesame oil is pressed from the seeds of the plant. This beautiful oil has been used since ancient times especially in the practice of Ayurveda. It is high in essential fatty acids and contains vitamins B, E, minerals and proteins. It is nourishing, moisturizing and soothing with natural sun protection. It is surprising how easily the skin absorbs this rich oil. Emollient
Tips: Use in facial products for natural sun protection.
Usage: Use for most skin types especially dry, normal, damaged, eczema and psoriasis. Age-defying
